Saints of Africa

Friday, August 15th, 2008

Another book by Father Jerome Sanderson, this book gives short lives of each of the Saints of Africa which are depicted on the Saints of Africa icon on the cover–also pained by Father Jerome.  These are some of the best known saints of Africa but the work is far from conclusive. Northern Africa played a major part in the earlier church and helped catechize parts of Europe…like Great Britain. Why isn’t it better known that Christianity is very far from a “white man’s religion”???? Yes we usually have some posters and mounted icons of the Saints of Africa in the bookstore.

Large Book of Prayers with Icons

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

This book actually comes in two sizes, large with large print and small. It contains the most basic prayers with accompanying icons. The large size was originally designed for a vision impaired friend of the publishers, but either size has its uses. Both sizes are good for children or beginners to use in long services and to gain familiarity with Orthodox prayer.

This lovely children’s book tells what every child in Ireland knows–that it was not Columbus who discovered America, but St. Brendon the Navigator, many centuries earlier.

St. Moses – The Ethiopian by Father Jerome Sanderson

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

One of those childrens’ books that is for “children of all ages,” this book is written and illustrated by local author, artist, iconographer, woodcarver, priest and consummate story teller, Fr. Jerome Sanderson of Martinsville Indiana and of Christ the Saviour Orthodox parish and St. John the Barefoot Bookstore in Nashville, Indiana. St. Moses the Ethiopian is one of the early desert fathers of about the fifth century. He began his life as a slave but was so intractable that he was let go, and became an infamous bandit chief in the Theibad. Fr. Jerome tells the story of his ferocity and his conversion and gradual transformation into a wonderworking elder. Fr. Jerome has another book in the store. We’ll get to it later.
